Militia - Dunarobba #1990

MILITIA is an Italian post-punk/alternative rock from Perugia. MILITIA was born officially in late ‘82 when a post-punk band called STRANGE MILITIA, formed in 1979 (before as LO NOIZE), disbanded. Founder members: Dario Bavicchi (keyboards, electronics, guitar and vocals), Fabrizio Croce (rhythms, electronics and vocals) and Giovanni Romualdi (guitars). Bass players were, in chronological appearance, Augusto Croce (late founder of AIDONS LA NORVEGE), Nicoletta Vinti (late in London with THE PASSIONS and with TRANSGLOBAL UNDERGROUND original line-up), Claudio Castrini, Andrea Conversano (a long-time member of the band), Arlo Bigazzi (solo-artist and founder of Materiali Sonori Label) and Aroldo Toccaceli. Without a bass player the three remaining members are still continuing in 2006 as open line-up featuring part-time collaborators.

The live activity of MILITIA was developed between 1984 and 1992 with tours in Germany and in Holland and concerts all over Italy; they performed in the most representative italian clubs and billed in the most important festivals of that period, contributing to start an italian “new-wave” scene. During their career they received sincere appreciation worldwide. At the end of the ‘80’s MILITIA started a partnership with Materiali Sonori label, the oldest italian “indie”. Two records will be produced with this important label: Dunarobba and Elvengamello.

The first part of the MILITIA career is signed by a classical wave production, dark atmospheres and really energetic post-punk bases. With the Dunarobba record starts an experimental itinerary that it will continue until the last works.

Since 1996 MILITIA started also to work for avant-garde theatre, cinema and visual arts.

Bologna Violenta - Uno bianca #2014

Uno bianca is the fourth BOLOGNA VIOLENTA's full lenght album, out on February 2014 thanks to Woodworm, Wallace Records and Dischi Bervisti.

This concept album is based on the crimes of the “Banda della Uno Bianca”, a gang formed by five policemen and a civilian operating in the Bologna area (from 1987 to 1994), which made more than hundred crimes, killing twenty four people and wounding more than hundred.

The gang's name is taken from the type of car used for the crimes, a white Fiat Uno, very popular in Italy in those years.

The gang, led by Savi brothers, has always been known for the brutality of its operations that didn't save the lives of those who was between criminals and their purpose. The album goes over twenty-seven steps in its criminal history, a sort of imaginary soundtrack of the gang's worst crimes against gas stations, motorway tollbooths, banks and supermarkets.

Uno bianca is characterized by extreme sounds, made even more dramatic by the massive use of string orchestras. The song form is completely abandoned, the track structures are modeled on the progress of events, as reported by the procedural acts.

BOLOGNA VIOLENTA wants to pay homage to the city of Bologna, telling through music one of his most violent stories ever. He does it with an extremely dark album, in which the death bell rings to remember the tragedy and madness of those times.

Mombu - Niger #2013

Italian supergroup MOMBU owe a debt of influence to LIGHTNING BOLT. Drummer Antonio Zitarelli is from NEO, and baritone saxophonist Luca T. Mai is from Doklands favourites ZU. Two people is enough for a supergroup, isn't it? If not they've got a few guest musicians who occasionally join in the fun. The fun in question is a devastating mix of grinding metal, free jazz, and African drumming. Mombu work best when they stay in the centre of their influences and don't veer off too far into authenticity. Such is the case with Niger, the title track of their 2013 album. Genres collide with full force into each other in this pulsating barrage of sound. Juddering, abrasive and entirely awesome, MOMBU are making music the likes of which have never been heard before.

Drowning Pool - Drowning Pool #1987

Drowning Pool's second album is an entrance into a zone of dangers and torments, landscapes of fluid forms and terrifying violence, initiation rites of suffering, sweat and tears, with glimpses into spaces of transcending beauty. The march of imperialism, machinery of oppression, fragmented barks of military orders' speaking a language we don't understand (Romans); ominous, relentless drums, feverish sleep punctuated by the "erotic sound of gunfire" (Pogrum); jungle sounds, primitive drumming and dancing, savage female voices, eerie incantations, infernal animal and bird noises, squawks and grunts, cooking pots and hunters' cries, and a vibrating buzzing (this sound is often described at the beginning of psychedelic voyages, and Huichol shamans create e a similar sound, like hiving bees, prior to initiation ceremonies). "Archaic slave rhythm" (Open Palms) women with flowing guitar chords; a wild ecstatic voice and fierce drumming, a driving, un/coiling motion, in New Tremblin Fingers.

Residents Uninc. - Santa Dog (2x7") #1972

Welcome to the wild, bizarro world of the experimental artists called The Residents. Little is known about the group's origins or its members' identities, although it is widely believed that they are based out of San Francisco, California. When their debut release, Santa Dog, first appeared in 1972 on the equally enigmatic Ralph Records/Cryptic Corporation, the few hundred copies quickly fell on deaf ears and blind eyes*. Rumor has it that then-President Richard Nixon sent his record back.
True to their "Theory of Obscurity" concept, The Residents cultivate mystery to ensure artistic integrity. With different musical personas for each of its four tracks, Santa Dog is a fully-formed avant-garde pastiche of musique concrète, Raymond Scott-esque exotica, television sound effects, and the group's own mutilated take on rock'n'roll that later became known as their trademark aesthetic.

*Limited edition of roughly 500. About 100 were mispressed or had other issues, and 300 were mailed out to friends, musicians, and various celebrities. All copies are signed and intentionally misnumbered, e.g. 16/18, 7/58,000, 2/1, 11/12.
Packaged in a gatefold sleeve made to resemble an insurance agency's Christmas card. Several copies had the sleeves stuck together because they were folded and packaged before the varnish, applied to seal in the hand silk-screened cover art, had sufficiently dried.

Theo Teardo & Blixa Bargeld - Still smiling #2013

Chi ha letto sul Mucchio la nostra intervista di un paio di mesi fa conosce già i retroscena del rapporto di amicizia, più ancora che di sodalizio artistico, che lega Teho Teardo e Blixa Bargeld dai tempi dello spettacolo Ingiuria, nel 2009, proseguito nel 2010 nella colonna sonora di Una vita tranquilla di Claudio Cupellini.

Due anni di idee e musiche, rimbalzate fra lo studio di Teardo, a Roma, e quello di Bargeld, o meglio, dei suoi EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN, con l’appoggio sostanziale del violoncello di Martina Bertoni e del BALANESCU QUARTET; due pezzi già noti, la cover di Alone with the moon dei TIGER LILIES e la revisione proprio di A quiet life; dieci altri brani in cui i caratteri più estremi del duo si stemperano verso orizzonti dalle grandi aperture liriche (mai puramente melodiche, attenzione; semmai, potentemente suggestive), dove il lavoro di cesello di Teho si sposa con una voce antica e quasi implacabile come quella di Blixa. Una voce che affronta la nostra lingua, nonostante le scuse di rito (Mi scusi), con un’eleganza sconosciuta a parecchi dei nostri cantanti, si destreggia con l’inglese in bilico fra dramma e grottesco (Still smiling), sfodera, anche nella sua lingua, insospettabili doti da coroner. All’industrial che fu, per tutti e due, un perno importante su cui far ruotare le proprie suggestioni, si sostituisce una modulazione notturna, suggestiva, verrebbe da azzardare incantata. È lo stupore di fronte all’eterna suggestione delle note e dei timbri che reggono tutto il percorso di un cd impossibile da infilare in qualsiasi insieme chiuso. Se volete, chiamatela elettronica ben temperata, oppure acustica emotiva dei relé (ma mica solo di quelli), tanto per divertirvi. Ancora una volta, meglio ascoltare, che (de)scrivere.

Drowning Pool - Drowning Pool #1986

Limitato a 1000 copie, etichetta bianca con logo custom "viva", catalogo REVI002, copertina non incollata apribile, (affascinante ed enigmatico art-work da parte di Claudio Di Gianbattista ), completa di inserto, lo stupendo e raro primo album dei Drowning Pool, oscura splendida ed indimenticabile band californiana originaria di Los Angeles. Grazie alla Viva Records nel 1986 pubblicano questo loro primo lavoro, denso, sognante, evolutivo. La voce di Andrew Crane ci accompagna in sognanti e malate atmosfere per crescere in implosioni solari. Assolutamente ineccepibili, stupenda glaciale wave usa; i Drowning Pool sono stati uno dei pi—ù importanti gruppi apppartenenti alla scena denominata "trance music" che ebbe altri fondamentali esponenti nei SAVAGE REPUBLIC, 17 PYGMIES e RED TEMPLE SPIRITS. Eterei ed oscuri insieme, onirici ma inquietanti.

Mamuthones - Mamuthones #2011

Mamuthones is the solo project of Alessio Gastaldello, founder and ex drummer of JENNIFER GENTLE, Italy’s psych pop mavericks currently signed to Sub Pop Records. After amicably leaving the band in 2007, Alessio put out a couple of solo releases under the Mamuthones moniker for Italian avant-garde labels like A Silent Place and Boring Machines. 

Now he’s back with an unholy racket of an album that sees him supported by a real (and somehow improbable) band formed by longtime associate Marco Fasolo (Jennifer Gentle singer and main man) on guitar and production duties and 62-year old drummer Maurizio Boldrin, a local legend who since the Sixties has played in countless beat and prog groups including Pino Donaggio’s band (yes, the same Donaggio who wrote You don’t have to say you love me and soundtracked multiple Brian De Palma, Nicholas Roeg and Joe Dante movies).

This eponymous album is a definite step beyond previous Mamuthones’ releases: it still retains the droney, foreboding darkness of its older siblings, but this time the sound is the one of a raw, aggressive rock trio.

Shrouded in a haze of psychedelic noise and firmly rooted to Boldrin’s inventive and powerful drumming, the album gathers a series of crushing performances interspersed with shorter, more reflective interludes. 

At times hypnotically thundering (The first born), monstrously rhythmic (like on the real tour-de-force that is Ota Benga, all pounding percussion, Sun Ra-styled keyboard solos and fractured guitars) or simply unnerving (check ghostly closer Ave Maria), the album’s heaviness is balanced by tracks like the pulsing Kash-O-Kashak that, with its buzzing bouzouki-like guitars, manages to sound at the same time menacing and melancholic, or the airy, subdued MJ 74 (actually recorded by Maurizio Boldrin back in 1974!). 

Like a hard-bitten version of YA HO WAH 13 dealing with the celestial slowness of a Japanese tea ceremony or a Catholic mass celebrated by a demonic Father Karras, Mamuthones have delivered an album of black, truly anguished psychedelia where the listener can find hope glimmering at the end of the tunnel.

Bardini/Fiori Carones - Il viale giallo della vergogna (tape) #1980

Quale sorpresa per tutti coloro che amano le emozioni genuine, oserei dire cervicali e demenziali allo steso tempo (nel senso positivo dei termini). Questo vero e proprio Ep in cassetta la  cui durata complessiva è di 13'38", è di salutare freschezza da parte del giovane flautista dei THELEMA (Gregorio Bardini) e del "suonatore" di chitarre più originale e carico di idee che io conosca (Fiori Carones). Quattro brani le cui atmosfere richiamano solo per un istante lievi giornate accaldate in terra d'Oriente. Quasi una vacanza sonora, in cui si fondono insieme varie immagini di cartoline del Medio Oriente. Il miraggio, la confusione, il cambio di civiltà, calde e pazienti giornate passate alla visita delle città lontane. Questo non è che un richiamo sottilissimo, quasi impercettibile, come dimostra L'oriente non si vede uno dei titoli più omogenei e felici del breve lavoro. Non mi piacciono gli accostamenti di etichette o di suoni derivati da questo, o da quel musicista o presunto tale, ma solo per invogliarvi all'ascolto potrei sistemare questo sillabario sonoro, utile e discreto come ogni libro di scuola, come una piccola fusione tra gli WIRE più intransigenti e i primi DISSIDENTEN.
Meglio poca musica, di qualità emozionalmente sincera, che interi Lp's di suoni falsi, stantii e alla moda. Complimenti! (Luca Rigato)

Thelema - Rosa†Croce (tape) #1985

Le origini di un gruppo musicale sono sempre avvolte da leggende o strane storie.
Non è il caso dei Thelema.
Infatti il gruppo si formò nel più normale dei modi nell'inverno del 1984 a Modena quando Massimo Mantovani ex BLOUSONS NOIRS, il bassista Giorgio Parmigiani ex THROBS OF PLEASURE e Gregorio Bardini ex T.A.C. diedero vita alla band ispirati alle idee, alla filosofia e all’opera esoterica di Aleister Crowley, chiamandola appunto Thelema.
La prima urgenza fu quella di cercare un batterista e lo trovarono in Marco Bucciarelli. Con questa prima line-up composero i primi brani (The Golem, The Dance of the Witches, Sweet Pain, e le inevitabili covers di SIOUXIE AND THE BANSHEES e VELVET UNDERGROUND e di altri gruppi). Sicuramente influenzati dalla dark-wave e dal post-punk inglese dell'epoca, riuscirono comunque a dare una propria impronta sonora alle loro canzoni, dove una importante miscelazione quasi tribale tra basso e batteria creava il tappeto ritmico per le armonie di chitarra elettrica e tastiere, il tutto sorvolato dalle melodie vocali non sempre cantate ma anche urlate. L'esordio dal vivo risale al novembre del 1984 ad Ostiglia (Mantova) nel quale suonarono il loro totale repertorio di allora. Realizzarono un primo demo-tape chiamato The Golem and the fall of the dying gods contenente 5 brani e nella facciata b uno stralcio di quel concerto. Nel dicembre dello stesso anno registrarono il primo singolo Rosa Alchemica che uscì nei primi mesi del 1985 insieme alla fanzine Signal di Sandro Bergamo per le Edizioni Lumiere. Le recensioni sulle riviste specializzate e sulle fanzine furono unanimemente positive, e i Thelema iniziarono anche una costante attività live.
Sempre nel 1985 Massimo e Gregorio incisero un nastro di musica rituale intitolato Rosa†Croce, le cui prime 93 copie furono numerate in oro. I primi consensi di pubblico, specialmente a livello locale, li portarono subito in studio per registrare altri nuovi brani. [...]

Ekhnatòn, originally released in 1984 as a vinyl LP by Multiple Configuration in collaboration with the legendary ADN label, collects tracks recorded by the most daring and remarkable bands that were active in the experimental Italian scene during those years. Simple Italian Research Vol. 1 was (and still is) the subtitle of an album that includes two tracks from each of the following bands: Maze 1066, Tasaday, Evitaxal - an alias for Roberto Marinelli, also active as LAXATIVE SOULS - and the more well-known and active TAC (Tomografia Assiale Computerizzata).

Luciano Berio/Bruno Maderna - Acousmatrix 7 (reissue) #2004

Acousmatrix 7: Berio/Maderna is the seventh installment in a series of discs from the Dutch label BVHaast that is canvassing the output of the pioneering European electronic music studios, such as the ORTF in Paris, the WDR studio in Cologne, and, in this case, the RAI Studio di Fonologia in Milan. It contains several of the key electronic pieces produced at this facility in the late '50s and early '60s by two early masters of the genre, Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna.
Fans of John Cage's early electronic masterwork Fontana Mix, created at the Studio di Fonologia in 1958, may be surprised to find Berio drawing from the same pool of taped sources as Cage in his work Momenti (1960). This is its first appearance on CD, whereas it is the second for both Thema - Omaggio a Joyce (1958) and Visage (1962). Yet it is not particularly easy to find RCA's Berio album Many more voices, which is out of print, containing both of these pieces. Thema - Omaggio a Joyce (1958) and Visage (1962) are famous milestones within the history of electronic music and feature the irreplaceable artistry of Berio's then-wife, soprano Cathy Berberian.
Maderna's electronic music is generally not well known outside of Europe, and the appearance here of Le rire (1962) and Invenzione su una voce (also known as Dimensioni II) (1960) is most welcome. Whereas in Cage's electronic music, where one laughs but the composer doesn't seem to get the joke, Maderna revels in outwardly ridiculous, fragmented sounds, clearly choosing and combining what pleases him personally without the slightest recourse to apparent structural procedures. The "una voce" is once again Berberian, utilizing an unusual text source, the notorious Letteristic book by Hans G. Helms Fa:m'Ahnewgwow published in 1959 and entirely made up of word fragments devoid of "sense" or story. The sound on this BVHaast disc is great, as through some miracle they have transferred the vintage and artifactual tapes to disc without the slightest hint of tape hiss. Contrary to the notes, both Le rire and Invenzione su una voce have appeared on CD before, in an Italian collection of Maderna's electronic music on the Stradivarius label. Yet as with Many more voices, who can actually find a copy of it? By any measure, Acousmatrix 7: Berio/Maderna is an excellent option for these key early electronic works.

Rosemary’s Baby was an italian industrial band active in the mid ’80s. It was connected with Thee Temple Ov Psychick Youth when Genesis P. Orridge was still involved with it: they founded Centro Ricerche Studi Babalon, an italian branch of TOPY.

VV.AA. - Songs for a child - A tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini #2009

La label italiana Rustblade decide di omaggiare la figura di Pier Paolo Pasolini con questo tributo che esce in edizione limitata (696 copie) e in una curatissima veste grafica opera del maestro Saturno Buttò. Una compilation di 14 brani quindi, per lo più inediti, che abbraccia quanto di meglio si muove oggi in Italia, e non solo, all'interno del panorama sperimentale post-industriale.
Un sottile fil rouge lega questa raccolta ad un famoso antecedente storico-musicale, ovvero  l'omaggio che il duo albionico di COIL aveva reso alla figura dell'artista friulano con quella Ostia (The Death Of Pasolini) contenuta all'interno dello splendido Horse Rotorvator e che inaugura magistralmente questo lavoro, quasi un'epigrafe posta a sancire un passaggio di testimone tra un glorioso passato e un luminoso presente. Si prosegue quindi con BAHNTIER, creatura di Stefano Rossello già mente della stessa Rustblade, che con Childawn ci propone una elegante suite di ambient esoterico, distante dai tradizionali lidi sonori elettronico-industriali a cui ci aveva abituati nelle sue precedenti produzioni. Ed ecco quindi arrivare Simone Salvatori, SPIRITUAL FRONT, che con l'ottimo folk-pop di Erotic sacrifice ci dà un assaggio di quello che sarà il suo nuovo lavoro, seguito di quell'acclamatissimo Armageddon Gigolò che aveva stregato pubblico e critica nel 2006.
Diverte e inquieta, invece, il bizzarro pastiche post-industriale di Pppetrolio, ad opera di TEATRO SATANICO, probabilmente uno dei pezzi più eccentrici presenti in questa raccolta. Una mefitica cappa di nera pece annuncia Never closed my eyes, episodio a firma IN SLAUGHTER NATIVES, che si caratterizza per un deciso appeal esoterico, come nella miglior tradizione di questo leggendario combo scandinavo che ha marchiato a fuoco l'epopea death-industrial anni 90.
La palma d'oro della miglior opera contenuta in questo lavoro spetta però a Stefano Musso aka ALIO DIE e alla sua Splendido struggente: una delicata e tormentata sonata per archi intrisa di quel sapore classicheggiante tanto caro all'autore del Vangelo Secondo Matteo e sovrastata dalla voce del poeta che declama le sue appassionate e ardite liriche civili. [...]
Da un punto di vista prettamente musciale, tuttavia, Songs for a child funziona e ci permette oltretutto di tirare le somme sull'ottimo stato di salute della scena post-industriale italiana.

Massimo Toniutti - Autofonia (tape) #1986

Debut cassette from this Italian act, well known as the brother of Giancarlo Toniutti. Self released in 1986.

Most 'Industrial' material ever from this act. Composed by several pieces onto one long track on each side, contains metallic clank from concrete style to percussive ones, onomatopoeic voices, gloomily electronics and so on. Subtitled as "Il Clangore della propria voce dell'orecchio". Comes with a hand numbered J-card printed on matte photographic paper.

VV.AA. - Frammenti (tape) #1987

Excellent Italian compilation, with the exception of one French band and one from Holland. Modern-classical & experimental composition. Two Tone: are from Holland, Eindhoven to be exact. Marco Pustianaz, Dr Cancer: is an Italian artist who made solo recordings and releases under the name Dr Cancer, he also worked with Dsordne, Marco Pustianaz started in the mid Eighties as a Fanzine it evolved like many other independent ventures with it´s contacts. An associated mail-order catalogue and involvement in concert and tour organisation led into releasing the DsorDNE/LEGENDARY PINK DOTS split 7" in 1987 and to further involvement with Marco Milanesio’s project (Dsordne) which founded the bases for the Hax Materiali Per La Comunicazione Label. Giorgio Cantoni: Italian artist who has releases under the name L’ULTIMO ARCANO, and worked with DETONAZIONE. DDAA: see → or →. Dsordne: (read Disordine) are a tight group of people deeply involved with how to experiment with electronics and lyrics, therefore they’re not terribly “in” in Italy at the moment, believing as they do in personal communication rather than in market strategies. They started to get some recognition around 1985 with the single Premonition 11, shared with Legendary Pink Dots, which came out in three editions. Frammenti was released as a cassette in a video box with a 24 paged booklet (bound together with a cord and lead closing) by Bekko Bunsen (BEBÚ 882) in 1987.
