Shockin' T.V./Tiratura Limitata - Milano 1983 (7") #1983

One of those really hard to find 7"s of Italian HC/Punk of the 80s that you need up to 200 euros to purchase today. On one side you have Shockin' TV with their political HC/Punk - 9 short, raw and unpolished songs that clock in just over 9 minutes total. On the flipside Tiratura Limitata, more on the Punk side of things, offer very varied songs. They fuse Punk, Oi and Ska and within their 9 minutes of music fit "only" 3 songs. All in all, 12 songs, over 18 minutes of music on one 7"! Foldout poster cover with lyrics and photos, just like the original.

Intothebaobab - Verdi acidi pensieri #2013

Secondo disco in formato vinilico 12″ degli IntoTheBaobab, oggi uno dei gruppi più stacanovisti nella diffusione della controcultura punk a Bologna, città, provincia & oltre...ormai uno strano satellite in perenne movimento nella galassia libertaria italiana. I solchi verdi e neri di questo disco sono pregni di urgenza comunicativa: una visione della realtà lucida come le maniglie del Titanic & disperatamente critica come il suicidio di un Kamikaze, ma allo stesso tempo caratterizzata da una proposta positiva, come sempre filtrata dalla sbilenca e oscura ironia che distingue i Baobab dalla trita e ritrita formula che vuole il punk solo come "sputare rabbia alla cieca". La musica va a bracetto con le visioni che offrono questi 11 pezzi, con sonorità e arrangiamenti, che per quanto semplici, sono concepiti come perenne tentativo di scardinare i fluidi e nebulosi confini del "genere punk", storpiarli per allargarli. Una secchiata di acido verde sulla carcassa della nemica "normalità".

Rabid Duck - Sberequack (demotape) #1988

Foglio richiede, il gentilissimo Jolicoeur fornisce e io scopro. In effetti non avevo mai sentito parlare di questo quintetto ravennate che, oltre al debutto su nastro in questione, ha pubblicato un lp nel 1989 (Who framed Rabid Duck, al momento introvabile) e partecipato alla storica compila su 7" (Between the clouds), che nel 1991 ha segnato l'esordio discografico tanto per la Green che per la SOA records. Poi sull'internet scopro che l'Andrea che qui urla nel microfono, sarà Deda negli ISOLA POSSE ALL STARS e nei SANGUE MISTO.

Ah, il Papero Rabbioso suona un punk/hardcore piuttosto hardrockeggiante condito da liriche negative ed annoiate, con qualche episodio fortunato (Rabid ducks, Living in a fen, The 7th year crisis) ma nel complesso non proprio esaltante.

Rimane comunque un frammento, per quanto minore, a testimonianza del prolifico sottobosco punk degli 80's italiani.

Sickoids - Sickoids #2012

The home of DAYLIGHT ROBBERY, DEFECT DEFECT and CANADIAN RIFLE, there’s no question that Chicago’s Residue Records is one of the top imprints for jean jacket/black toque punk. You know the kind: elements of pummeling hardcore from various sub-sub-subgenres with just enough melody to keep you coming back for more. Few bands exemplify that sound as well as Philadelphia’s Sickoids.
Sure, if you’re one of those masters of describing hardcore, you’d be sure to impress everyone at the local squat with the elements of d-beat, UK82, post-hardcore and melodic working-man punk on the band’s self-titled debut. Played separately, it’s hard to see the link between the mid-tempo fuzz attack of My curse, the angular melody of Hope subsides, the gravelly pop-punk of King of the dirt mound and the straight-up noisy blasts of Bleached bodies.
It’s kind of bizarre, really — somehow, in 18 minutes, Sickoids touch sonic ground once tread by VARUKERS, DIE KREUZER, THE REPLACEMENTS, CRASS, ARTICLES OF FAITH and even a tiny bit of JAWBREAKER. To genre purists, this all-over-the-place description might sound like a living hell, but in an age where even the best bands are following strict structural rules, it’s a breath of fresh air to listen to a record this diverse. Without sacrificing any pent-up fury, Sickoids’ ability to shift genres makes for an endlessly compelling listen.

Napoli Hardcore/Punk at its climax of energy and spontaneity in full early '80s italo-HC shape. Fast, distorted to the bone, exploding in anger. Not only they were among the first in Italy to introduce the D-beat formula of the first wave of Dis-influenced bands (think of EU'S ARSE as well) but they also added an overdose of buzzsaw distortion that made their nuclear feared / post atomic sound a real gem for those who're able to discern this kind of atmospheres and also those who enjoy the latter wall of noise HC of bands like CONFUSE, GAI, GUDON and similar ear destroyers!

Like most compilations, a little spotty. Raw Power starts off and blows away all the competition. Their sound here is sooooo much better than their first LP, as they showcase their breakneck stop-and-start sound with vocals literally spit out through your speakers. Rappresaglia and Pedago Party both go for a more popular thrash sound. The other band, Rivolta Dell'Odio, has a slower art-damaged sound.

High Circle - 6 track ep (7") #1985 + Out of darkness #1986

High Circle comme son nom ne l'indique pas, sont italiens et surtout sont straight edge et ça, ça me fait chaud au coeur! C'était pas si courant que ça les groupes européens qui se disaient SXE. Musicalement on en est assez loin et tant mieux, on est à Rome en 85 pas à Washington en 81 (ou NY en 88, ou Ypres en 95 ou à Montceau en 26). Mais l'idée y est et elle est revendiquée surtout. Pas banal! Ce sont aussi des skateurs, mais bon à la limite je m'en fous un peu. A l'époque, ça faisait déja longtemps que j'avais arrêté le skate.
Vous pourrez voir dans la pochette qu'ils remercient Ian McKaye pour l'inspiration. Certainement pour l'inspiration spirituelle parce que pour la musicale, on sent qu'ils se rapprochent plus de 7 SECONDS et c'est encore plus flagrant sur le Lp Out of darkness sorti sur Subcore aux EU. Sauf qu'il est pas bien ce Lp, ils ont trop à cette époque assimilé l'influence Kevin seconds/New wind et ça tourné à une pop core insipide (ou presque, c'est surtout du au son pas génial).

Fall Out - Demo 1992 (tape) #1992

Uno dei gruppi più importanti della scena hardcore-punk italiana anche se non hanno avuto tutta l'attenzione e la fortuna che si meritavano. Questo dovuto in parte alla natura del gruppo di per sè poco incline ai compromessi. Benzo, Marco, Beppe e Giampus sono stati i primi nel'77 alla Spezia, in zona e in Italia ad avere un repertorio di brani da potere reggere un concerto di un'ora cosa che per i gruppi punk a quei tempi non era da poco*. Tutti i loro concerti sono stati un evento con successo di pubblico ovunque si esibissero.
Questo è un demo, che mi diede Benzo, una cassetta con 6 brani che precedette l'uscita di Xenodrome del 1992, quando avvenne il primo cambio di organico. Marco aveva lasciato il gruppo ed era subentrato Andrea alla chitarra. Il suono era cambiato ma siamo ancora ai livelli dei dischi precedenti con classici come Kit per tagliare, Xenodrome, Schizofrenia ecc.

*(caricavano batteria e ampli e strumenti in treno x andare a suonare in giro e una volta a Milano al Leoncavallo in un concerto con altri gruppi gli chiesero quanti pezzi avevano tutti ne avevano 5 o 6... loro 50!!!)

Os Estudantes - Álbum #2007

This is one fucking cool record. Sounds like a blend of old US punk with bits of Brazilian punk mixed in there. Snotty vocal delivery and catchy songwriting make this a great listen. Nice stark silk-screened cover with minimal graphics adds to the whole package here. Now, onto the bad stuff. This really good record with cool art (and did I mention that it is on yellow vinyl?) has a major flaw. There are only 100 fucking copies in existence – now isn't that cute? Good luck getting a hold of this.

Putrid Fever - Do you remember? #1994

In the early 1980s, when tattoos were still considered taboo and the only squats in Italy were the Virus in Milan and the Victor Charlie in Pisa, four sinister individuals got together to form Putrid Fever. This Florentine group was to be a milestone in G.D.H.C. (Tuscan hardcore) and founding member Fefo Forconi would go on to further glory as a member of the American band TOXIC REASONS. Includes the band's 1984 demo tape and 1985 7" EP, along with songs taken from the Goot From The Boot compilation. A rare slice of mid-'80s hardcore made in Italy.
