Lightning Bolt - John Peel session #2004

Easily the best release from this band, as it's basically better versions of all their best songs. It was from a show in early 2005, so it's between Wonderful rainbow and Hypermagic mountain, and you can hear how there's early versions of a few Hypermagic mountain songs on here (tracks 2, 5, and the ending of track 4).

The studio albums have a hard time capturing them with this kind of intensity. Brian and Brian add so much more energy to the tracks in the live setting than they could ever possibly do in the studio. The climaxes are all amplified and songs flow into each other seamlessly in perfect fashion, often while they are in full noisy apocalypse mode. You can hear just how many hours these two guys have obviously been jamming together to become this tight with each other.

Fuzz Orchestra - Fuzz Orchestra #2007

Fuzz Orchestra was born in 2005, Luca Ciffo (guitar/voice), Fabio Ferrario (analogic manipulations) and Marco Mazzoldi (drums) decide, while running other musical projects (BRON Y AUR, COLLETTIVO 46), to start a band moving on different coordinates.

Starting from radical improvisation, the band achieves to forge a sound which, today, is built on strong rock textures, guitar and drums based, on which a fluxus of outer sounds (old movies, old vinyls cut ups, noise streams and real time audio manipulations) ties and rages.

In 2007 they release their self titled debut album, scarcely 30 minutes between noise and kraut rock, the themes being glorious (La Resistenza against fascism) and dark (’60 and ’70 state terrorism) moments of contemporary italian history.

Laghetto - Sonate in bu minore per quattrocento scimmiette urlanti #2003

è una delle hit incontrastate del circuito punk do-it-yourself, e non a torto: in un crescendo delirante loro gridano "uomo pera" e i kids replicano in coro "merda!" e il rito si compie. il brano è - l'avrete capito - uomo pera, e loro sono i bolognesi LAGHETTO, autodescrittisi come i "REFUSED internati in un reparto di psichiatria". ma se state pensando a qualcosa di goliardico vi sbagliate di grosso. trattasi di hardcore creativo coi fiocchi, poco stereotipato e molto potente, forte di stacchi mirabolanti e testi geniali (vedere ss napoli football players 1982-1989, o lo straripare verbale degno di un poeta slam di la mano senza dita e l'odore dei pomeriggi).

Xtravagance Core - Cabaret Terror Balera #2008 + Pirati d'acqua calda #2012

Il progetto Xtravagance Core nasce nel 2004 dalla disgregazione del gruppo CUT LINERS (R.I.P.), Ni/gölas (voce) e Tosgh (chitarra) decidono di portare avanti le ricerche di stravaganza sonora comincate ad indagare nella ska/metal band. Il nuovo sound sarà guidato dalla voglia di fondere il suono punk/grind all'attitudine del cabaret e degli spettacoli da vilaggio turistico, in un'atmosfera surreale e senza senso. Nel 2006 si aggiunge al progetto Dudankamion (batteria), fissando definitivamente la sessione ritmica alla sonorità della band, che diviene così un trio nella sua ossatura centrale; tuttavia la formazione del gruppo non è fissa ed è in costante collaborazione con vari ed eventuali personaggi come predikatori "marcificati", ballerine mutanti, frustatrici frustrate, ladri di cotolette, in una festa di latrati, coriandoli, feed back, e trombette da compleanno.
Dopo alcuni anni di sperimentazione canina, nei quali le fila Xtravagance hanno vantato la partecipazione di personaggi laidi del calibro di Miguel al Marcificatore e Gigi al basso, nonchè dopo vari concerti che li hanno visti impegnati nel circondario dell'emilia romagna ma anche in alcune zone del nord italia, gli Xtravagance ritornano in pista con un nuovo membro fisso nella band, Simobe il Pistillo, che già aveva collaborato per moltissimi concerti; bimoSe suona la tromba e le tastiere, ma è anche un ottimo imbecille, degno quindi di essere il quarto cavaliere dell'Xtravaganza!
Dopo la pubblicazione del loro primo album chiamato Cabaret Terror Balera, nonchè dell'edizione speciale Il Seg(c)reto dell'Intestino Crasso, nel 2012 gli Xtravagance Core pubblicano su vari market digitali un disco live di 15 brani, intitolato I Pirati d'Acqua Calda, registrato durante il concerto piratesco del Freak Festival al Beky Bay di Bellaria I. Miranda - Rectal exploration #2006

Post-rock abrasivo e spigoloso quello proposto nel secondo album dai Miranda. Il suono resta sempre quello ispirato in egual misura dal Louisville sound e dai SONIC YOUTH, ma nel complesso risulta messo a fuoco in maniera più matura rispetto al disco d’esordio Inside the whale (fromSCRATCH, 2003). E se il trio cita come referenti gente come Captain Beefheart o Arto Lindsay, indimenticato chitarrista dei seminali DNA, una ragione ci sarà pure; basta ascoltare le abrasioni chitarristiche di Zhou! The hell is a beer! o il blues anfetaminico e deforme dell’iniziale Cell trip per rendersene conto.

Il giardino degli ascolti e delle influenze del trio è dunque molto ampio e i semi gettati da JUNE OF 44 e SHELLAC, passando per il rock indi(e)pendente degli anni '90, germogliano rigogliosi in Rectal exploration: 3 bombs ricorda moltissimo i primi GIRLS AGAINST BOYS o, andando ancora più indietro nel tempo i sottovalutati HAIR & SKIN TRADING COMPANY con quel groove di basso e batteria, così come Monosexfiles fa intendere le capacità attuali del gruppo, sospesa com’è tra un semi p-funk d’assalto e una tensione sospesa tipica da gruppo noise del decennio scorso. La lunga Rough feeling è poi un sentito omaggio agli indiscussi padrini del post-rock, JUNE OF 44: una cavalcata trascinata e trascinante in cui la voce lamentosa di Giuseppe si accompagna ad un vortice strumentale in crescendo sempre sul punto di esplodere.

Il bello di questo disco, però, non risiede tanto nel rimando ossequioso ad ovvie ed ingombranti influenze noise e post-rock, quanto nell’evoluzione di quei codici in maniera personale. La destrutturazione dei pezzi, nonostante si resti all’interno della forma canzone, rende il tutto spigoloso, nevrotico e imprevedibile senza però perdersi in elucubrazioni noise autoindulgenti e fini a se stesse. In definitiva 11 piacevoli esplorazioni rettali, ma senza deflorazione, per fortuna.

J Church - Society is a carnivorous flower #2004

J Church's Austin, TX lineup makes its official debut with this long-player for Gainesville, Florida's No Idea imprint. They pick up where 2003's split with STORM THE TOWER left off, with David DiDonato's second guitar adding another dynamic layer to Church brain Lance Hahn's already raucous SG and righteous, erudite, and awesomely cynical vocals. (Bassist Ben White and drummer Chris Pfeffer are no slouches, either.) Society is a carnivorous flower begins with Overconfident, a tingling, rousing number straight outta the early - '90s punk-pop zeitgeist (think: POSTER CHILDREN). But J Church will likely hate this comparison if they read this, as the song itself is a typically correct Hahn evisceration of music geeks' obsession with elitism and rock history. "You worship Nico/You spit on Yoko", but "We are nothing more that all the things that came before". Styrofoam is Hahn's version of a love song, while the out of focus, melancholic indie of 210 tracks Our Singer's acceptance of inferiority to a tattooed cool guy. "Compared to your youthful wonder/I'm just four tracks and shitty rhymes". Yikes dude! Other highlights of the album include the PAVEMENT-ish Austin's shitty limits, as well as the 15-minute title track, which is actually a clanging thematic opera in the tradition of the WHO, a punk revivalist serial that seems to draw parallels between the narrator's frustrated sexual desire and the failures of the class system. Catchy? Yes, as hell. But let it be said again -- J Church's pop-ish melodies and punk footing don't make them devotees of the sugar-smack safety pin kids populating Warped Tour parking lots. Now go buy Lance Hahn a drink and make him feel better.

I Laghetto spaccano il culo. Basta ascoltare l'attacco del primo pezzo (Zucca)² per capire subito con cosa avete a che fare. Vi ricordate la potenza dei REFUSED? Vi ricordate la ferocia degli UNSANE? Vi ricordate gli stacconi degli SNAPCASE? Bene il trio bolognese non ha nulla da invidiare a tutte queste band di culto. I cinque pezzi presenti in questo promo (registrato benissimo) sono letteralmente delle bombe, dei concentrati di focalizzata violenza. La capacità del trio di utilizzare in maniera funzionale e divertente la lingua italiana (la canzone Uomo pera è già storia della musica per me) è sorprendente. Le impennate hardcore, gli "stop & go" del miglior noise americano, i deliranti e coloratissimi testi fanno di questa band, una delle più originali e divertenti che abbiamo in Italia. Sentitevi pure in colpa di non conoscerli.

Ludd - A colpi di mazza #2003

Ludd, anarco-core da Rovereto e nuovo progetto musicale - dopo una parentesi negli IMPACT e oltre dieci anni di interruzione - di Gigi Keller, già chitarrista, negli effettivi anni ottanta, dei leggendari YOUNGBLOOD (se non sapete chi sono vi manca l'ABC dell'ardecore!).
A colpi di mazza - titolo esplicito per un moniker esplicito - si compone di di nove tracce veloci e inconfondibilmente in continuità con il passato: mid-tempos, sfuriate hc e alternanza di voce maschile e femminile (Lorenzo e Federica) danno corpo ad una collezione di canzoni spesso intimiste ma costantemente di denuncia, che mi richiamano alla memoria - per associazione inconscia - gli ultimi INDIGESTI, gli IMPACT degli anni d'oro e molti vecchi gruppi della mitica Blu Bus. L'uomo che ama, tratta da un poema in prosa di Stig Dagerman, mi ha lasciato qualcosa.
Il disco è un benefit per i detenuti nelle carceri, e come tale non manca nell'inlay di testi inerenti all'argomento, ma anche dettati dal semplice istinto auto-esplicitativo, conditio sine qua non dei Ludd e di tutti gli altri veri gruppi del genere.

Il Giardino Violetto - Dans macabre #2004

Giardino Violetto was born in 1989, year in which many other bands formed,as an answer to an advertisement posted up in a record shop. Guitar, bass, drums and a garage to play in, as the natural expression for any angry teenager in hatred with the world, a quest for an aesthetics ofthe inner and social catastrophe which was, in the late 80ies, the natural habitat of the band. Darkness, claustrophobia, insight, altered states are the main themes in the lyrics and the sensations flowing from Giardino Violetto’s sound.
After some playing, the line up is reduced from three members to just two, adding instead a drum machine. The technical weakness of the duo led necessarly to an experimetal output. The sound ideas whirled wildly in their hot minds, but how to achieve was really far from realizing. Thus, after an year spent closed in that garage, decide to record these few drum machine patterns, lack of skill, and the load of ideas.
What is created is their first and only demo tape: Danse macabre. Beside the written lyrics and some bass/guitar parts, the tracks are almost made up freely, especially the vocals. Has been let the sensation of the moment take advantage, like a polaroid of real life excerpts. Just the time to do an unique gig at the Uonna Club, legendary club in Rome’s underground scene, and by then everything stop just in the way it started, from emptiness to nothing. The band split up, the two members take their own ways not to meet again...
The cd contains the 1989 demotape (digitally remastered), plus the remixes of two songs, L.iquid S.ensations D.isplay (S*phz remix 2004) and Litanie a Satana (FM/S*phz remix 2004).
Danse Macabre is the first cd to be released in Italy with Creative Commons licenses.

Six Minute War Madness - Full fathom six #2000

Six Minute War Madness were born in January 1992: Federico Ciappini on vocals, Paolo Cantù (former member of TASADAY and AFTERHOURS) and Xabier Iriondo (also in AFTERHOURS) on guitars, Massimo Marini on bass and Daniele Misirliyan on drums. In September 1993 they put out their first 7” Holy Joe/Evensong on the punk label Blu Bus and during the same year another song, Truck fucker, appeared on the compilation Faces Vol. 2. A year later they contributed four tracks to the album Lubrificant for your mind. In 1996 the band released their first full length album and switched to singing in Italian. The self-titled debut was followed by 1997′s Il vuoto elettrico and, after a slight line-up change, the band released 2000′s Full fathom six. While the first self-titled record is based on the melting of powerful mid-times and explosive and angular guitarwork, in the two albums that followed Six Minute War Madness started to experiment with form by incorporating sounds that can be traced to the Chicago/Louisville scene and to the Cantù-Iriondo-Magistrali side-project called A SHORT APNEA. Six Minute War Madness split up in 2002.

Os Estudantes - Álbum #2007

This is one fucking cool record. Sounds like a blend of old US punk with bits of Brazilian punk mixed in there. Snotty vocal delivery and catchy songwriting make this a great listen. Nice stark silk-screened cover with minimal graphics adds to the whole package here. Now, onto the bad stuff. This really good record with cool art (and did I mention that it is on yellow vinyl?) has a major flaw. There are only 100 fucking copies in existence – now isn't that cute? Good luck getting a hold of this.

VV.AA. - Songs for a child - A tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini #2009

La label italiana Rustblade decide di omaggiare la figura di Pier Paolo Pasolini con questo tributo che esce in edizione limitata (696 copie) e in una curatissima veste grafica opera del maestro Saturno Buttò. Una compilation di 14 brani quindi, per lo più inediti, che abbraccia quanto di meglio si muove oggi in Italia, e non solo, all'interno del panorama sperimentale post-industriale.
Un sottile fil rouge lega questa raccolta ad un famoso antecedente storico-musicale, ovvero  l'omaggio che il duo albionico di COIL aveva reso alla figura dell'artista friulano con quella Ostia (The Death Of Pasolini) contenuta all'interno dello splendido Horse Rotorvator e che inaugura magistralmente questo lavoro, quasi un'epigrafe posta a sancire un passaggio di testimone tra un glorioso passato e un luminoso presente. Si prosegue quindi con BAHNTIER, creatura di Stefano Rossello già mente della stessa Rustblade, che con Childawn ci propone una elegante suite di ambient esoterico, distante dai tradizionali lidi sonori elettronico-industriali a cui ci aveva abituati nelle sue precedenti produzioni. Ed ecco quindi arrivare Simone Salvatori, SPIRITUAL FRONT, che con l'ottimo folk-pop di Erotic sacrifice ci dà un assaggio di quello che sarà il suo nuovo lavoro, seguito di quell'acclamatissimo Armageddon Gigolò che aveva stregato pubblico e critica nel 2006.
Diverte e inquieta, invece, il bizzarro pastiche post-industriale di Pppetrolio, ad opera di TEATRO SATANICO, probabilmente uno dei pezzi più eccentrici presenti in questa raccolta. Una mefitica cappa di nera pece annuncia Never closed my eyes, episodio a firma IN SLAUGHTER NATIVES, che si caratterizza per un deciso appeal esoterico, come nella miglior tradizione di questo leggendario combo scandinavo che ha marchiato a fuoco l'epopea death-industrial anni 90.
La palma d'oro della miglior opera contenuta in questo lavoro spetta però a Stefano Musso aka ALIO DIE e alla sua Splendido struggente: una delicata e tormentata sonata per archi intrisa di quel sapore classicheggiante tanto caro all'autore del Vangelo Secondo Matteo e sovrastata dalla voce del poeta che declama le sue appassionate e ardite liriche civili. [...]
Da un punto di vista prettamente musciale, tuttavia, Songs for a child funziona e ci permette oltretutto di tirare le somme sull'ottimo stato di salute della scena post-industriale italiana.

Storm{O} - Storm{O} (ep) #2007

Nati come gruppo post rock/alternative, gli Storm{O} hanno via via appesantito il loro suono, in un primo momento con l'aggiunta di una spiccata deriva post-core e, successivamente, con l’introduzione di elementi di derivazione old-school.

Il risultato di queste successive mutazioni è un suono derivato e poliedrico, capace di spaziare dal grind all'hardcore, al noise, sempre nella declinazione post e contaminata dei termini, quasi a voler sottolineare un'irrefrenabile esigenza di superamento di schemi e cliché di genere. Va sottolineato come sulla lunga distanza il processo creativo funzioni e riesca a dare risultati, se non sempre perfettamente a fuoco, comunque interessanti/intriganti. Ciò che maggiormente colpisce è la voglia di cercare una propria via, come risultato di una commistione di input di varia natura rivisti e corretti alla luce di una personalità in via di definizione, ma già forte di una propria ben salda determinazione. In alcuni momenti, specialmente laddove la voce abbandona la cieca furia, si scorge un legame con i FRAMMENTI, altre volte a prevalere è la tensione iconoclasta figlia di certa scuola math-grind, in ogni momento è comunque ben presente l'affinità con le derive post-hardcore di ultima generazione. Difficile stabilire sin d'ora quali saranno gli sviluppi di tale tensione creativa, di sicuro ci si trova di fronte ad una formazione dalle molte frecce al proprio arco: una maggiore attenzione alla visione d'insieme e una minore dispersività in fase di songwriting porteranno senza dubbio al famoso salto di qualità.
