Paolino Paperino Band - Bestie feroci (ep) #1994

Ultimi giorni, ultimi dischi e ultime parole, prima di una sospensione prevista (ma spero solo provvisoria) dell'attività del blog, dovuta ad un espatrio intercontinentale volontario. Con pochissimo tempo a disposizione e la testa da tutt'altra parte, oggi vi sgancio l'ultima fatica registrata dalla PPB: cinque tracce in bilico tra punk, rock e reggae, che grazie all'ironia e all'intelligenza dei testi, colgono alcuni degli aspetti più banali eppure significativi dell'Italia anni '90. Ringrazio Chuan per avermi inviato il rip del vinile in flac (che ho provveduto a convertire in mp3 per la comodità di voi viziatoni), dal momento che la mia copia è talmente ondulata da essere inascoltabile.

Three Second Kiss - Everyday-everyman #1998

I TSK sono uno dei gruppi migliori nel panorama underground italiano; l'ambito in cui si muovono musicalmente a mio avviso non è facilmente definibile, dato che hanno comunque un modo molto "loro" di comporre... La scena cui si riferiscono è stata già delineata da gruppi come i JUNE OF 44, gli SHIPPING NEWS, gli SHELLAC e gli UZEDA, anche se questo non vuol dire che non si possano allargare quei confini (che già sembravano definiti!). TSK ci riescono dando la loro interpretazione, che risulta davvero molto personale e fantasiosa; hanno già un curriculum di tutto rispetto: sono tra i gruppi di punta dell'Indigena (etichetta e agenzia catanese gestita dagli Uzeda), un tour americano insieme ai JUNE OF 44, e un 12" stampato l'anno scorso per la Slowdime (sussidiaria della Dischord)...vi sembra poco?! Everyday-everyman è senza ombra di dubbio un gran bel disco, molto ben suonato e magnificamente registrato insieme a Ian Burgess; tutti i brani sono sicuramente di alto livello, mai scontati e d'impatto quanto basta; una collaborazione con Giovanna Cacciola (vocalist degli UZEDA) rende migliore un album già buono... Come si può definire la musica dei TSK...post-punk? Post-rock? Noise? Onestamente non lo so, so solo che si tratta di buona musica, e non di quella che ci propinano ogni mattina alla radio!!!

Girls Against Boys - **House of GVSB** #1996

With its fourth album in nearly as many years, Girls Against Boys proves itself worthy of the major-label bidding war that ensued over them with House of GVSB (Geffen won, although this album totes the band's favored indie-label logo).
With a preference for creatining music that lies somewhere in the darkened hollows between punk and metal, noise and hardcore, pop and soul, the band's odd amalgamation of sound is as confounding as its name, yet Girls Against Boys' tuneful, patchwork creations work wonderfully well.
Hailing from New York City (by way of Washington D.C.), Girls Against Boys lacks the blood-drawing harsh edges of its hometown brethern, taming it with the retro echo close on Life in pink or slyly slithering around pop-music history on Thekindamzkyoulike. Digging a deep-ditch groove, Girls Against Boys manipulate its dual-bass attack into a furious whirl, gaining a momentum that reaches dangerous levels. The repetitive, new-wave-induced organ of Disco six six six matched against the strong-willed walls of Scott McCloud's guitar nods to the band's metalistic fascination yet manages to keep the group's sound intact. Vera Cruz masters DEVO's simplistic mantra but adds a keening vocal chorus and a dry metronomic beat that makes for devilish fun. Whatever you're looking for - pleasure, pain, escape or comfort - it's laying somewhere in the grooves of House of GVSB.

Capite Damnare - Capite damnare (reissue) #2003

Nulla sapevo dei Capite Damnare, band anarcopunk milanese dei tardi anni '80, finché non entrai in possesso (grazie Marky!) di questa meravigliosa ristampa della loro prima ed unica cassetta registrata nel 1988. Il cd, curato da alcuni amici friulani, ripropone integralmente il booklet originale a sfondo fantasy con testi e commenti, che é davvero stupendo e che ho inserito in .jpg nell'archivio che potete scaricare da qui sotto, assieme ai nove pezzi (8 da studio e uno live), l'intera produzione di questa band (finora) dimenticata.
Il sound ricorda gli ANTISECT, ma naturalmente anche alcuni grandi gruppi anarcopunk italiani dell'epoca, come CONTROPOTERE e CONTRAZIONE, con momenti folkeggianti; brano più audace é They say: it's safe, per sola voce, nel quale la cantante Katia s'ispira evidentemente alla musica tradizionale gaelica. C'è spazio anche per una canzone sulla Milano craxiana dei tempi, intitolata Milano europea: "...Fermati un attimo, prova a pensare / crea aggregazione contro il ritmo inumano, contro l'annientamento...".
La band scriveva testi radicali piuttosto riusciti, di una complessità mediamente al di sopra degli standard compositivi di allora, e che meritano una lettura attenta. Dato che li trovate tutti nel booklet, non aggiungo altro. Buon ascolto!

Make Up - After dark #1997

Few bands have ever accomplished the level of confusion that the NATION OF ULYSSES were able to perpetuate in their four short years of existence. The band's swagger, destructive live shows, and jazz-infused brand of hardcore mixed with their over-the-top political rants and uncompromisingly militant presentation to create a mystique that has nearly become legendary. After the NATION’s implosion, three-fifths of the band teamed up with ex-FRUMPIES guitarist Michelle Mae to form the Make-Up. Rather than just continue on with the self-created “Ulysses Aesthetic,” the four decided to go in a somewhat different direction. A direction called Gospel Yeh-Yeh. On their live album After dark, the Make-Up play rock and roll that is overflowing with jazz and punk tendencies. A strong rhythm section composed of Steve Gamboa on drums and Michelle Mae on bass consistently lay down a groove that makes a perfect foundation for James Canty’s sparse guitar and organ work. While all the musicians in the band are impressive, Ian Svenonius is the star of this show. On tracks like We can't be contained, the music serves as nothing but a backdrop for his voice. The former NOU singer rants, raves, screams, and baby-talks the audience in attendance through a journey filled with faceless political enemies, lack of hope, and even the birth of a child (well, metaphorically, anyway). The band wants you to dance as much as they want you to listen to their front-man's hysterical preaching. They dubbed themselves Gospel Yeh-Yeh with good reason.
After dark is an entertaining listen. The production is great, so you can pick out every driving note of Michelle’s precision bass work, and the energy of a live setting does wonders for Ian. Some points can drag a bit and Ian’s tirades may wear thin on some, but in the end After dark is still definitely worth your time, if only to hear an influential band's live show when they were still in their prime. Fans of REFUSED and T(I)NC should especially take note since Dennis Lyxzén just about owes his entire career to the NOU and its subsequent offspring.

The Manges vs The Mc Rackins - Amp records battle royale! #2003

Ben 19 brani fra pop punk e rock 'n'roll in questo interessante split cd che vede insieme i canadesi Mc Rackins e gli italianissimi Manges, "punk rock veterans" di Las Pezia.
Iniziano i canadesi che propongono 5 brani inediti e altri 5 dal loro primo demo del '93, muovendosi con maestria fra rock'n'roll e pop punk (un po' rallentato). Tutti i pezzi sono orecchiabilissimi e c'è da segnalare una bella versione della classica Surfin' USA. Leggermente diverso l'approccio dei Manges che invece derivano più direttamente da RAMONES e SCREECHING WEASEL e inanellano nove pezzi pop punk eccezionali, all'insegna della velocità e della melodia. Dalla veloce She's right a Don't tell anyone è un succedersi di canzoni che lasciano il segno.

The Leeches - Fun is dead #2006

Fare meglio di Fun is dead non è possibile. Questo è una sorta di disco punk definitivo, in cui confluisce il meglio di quanto ha espresso in 30 anni questo genere musicale: RAMONES, ADOLESCENTS & California primi anni '80, ANGRY SAMOANS, senza dimenticare il rock scandinavo e la sua tamarraggine (forse sto parlando dei TURBONEGRO?). Aggiungeteci ironia a mille e attitudine al 100% et voilà un disco perfetto, in cui i pezzi sono uno meglio dell'altro, da Gorilla rock che lo apre alla cover di Who is who degli Adolescents che lo chiude, passando per Jesus loves the leeches (che già stava sul 7"), Feel it – Loose it, S.O.S. (Walter Matthau) e A leech is on me.

Ruins - Best of Ruins (tape) #1991

Oggi roba vera. Inutile proprio spendere parole per spiegare chi sia Tatsuya Yoshida, batterista, compositore e fondatore dei Ruins, uno capace di pubblicare più di cento dischi e di collaborare con personaggi del calibro di John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Fred Frith, Keiji Haino e Derek Bailey. Precursori, pionieri, avanguardisti e sperimentatori, dal 1985 i due Ruins sono in giro a diffondere il loro verbo per basso e batteria, parlato in lingua inaudita e musicato in maniera ancora più incredibile. Yoshida è cresciuto a pane e rock progressivo (anche con i suoi YBO2) ma con i Ruins decide di calcare la mano (soprattutto nel primo periodo) e di introdurre nelle sue produzioni tutta la furia dell'hardcore, il caos del noise-rock e la follia delle improvvisazioni libere, stuprando così i canoni di quel prog-rock al quale egli dichiara di ispirarsi (i francesi MAGMA su tutti) e giungendo a risultati sonori inediti o quanto meno diffcilmente etichettabili. Tutto ciò è rappresentato al meglio da questo introvabile Best of su nastro che raccoglie buona parte della produzione dei Ruins pre-90's e che rappresenta anche un piccolo miracolo della produzione indipendente italiana. A realizzarlo è stata infatti la beneventana Biotope Art Organization, capeggiata da Guglielmo Lanzilli, organizzatore anche di una storica data dei Ruins al Tien'A'Ment di Napoli nel 1991, poi trasferitosi a Londra dove ha continuato l'attività della sua etichetta soprattuto in ambito elettronico/esoterico/industriale. Sapete già invece che ad inviarmi il rip in questione è stato Raffaele, che nelle info notes ci spiega di aver provato a tagliare le singole canzoni di ogni lato e di averci poi rinunciato preferendo lasciare che il flusso dei Ruins scorresse così, disordinato, eterogeneo ed imbizzarrito, come da volontà dei suoi due creatori.

Soviet Soviet - Soviet soviet (ep) #2009

I Soviet Soviet sono un talentuoso trio di Pesaro: il gruppo è stato recensito da Soundslike (BE), Pitchfork (US) e This is the new thing (UK), quest'ultimo cita i Soviet Soviet come la nuova promessa della "New Italian Wave".
La band fa riferimento alla coldwave europea, con bassi crescenti e chitarre dai suoni che ricordano gruppi come SIGLO XX e ASYLUM PARTY, il tutto amalgamato da atmosfere che riportano ai JOY DIVISION di Ian Curtis e compagni.

ZGA - The end of an epoch #1991

This band hails from Latvia, and began working during a time when the government frowned upon (to put it mildly) independent "citizens" making their own music. Their original recording sessions were made under secretive conditions with homemade instruments and makeshift recording equipment in their own domicile, with matresses pushed up against the walls and windows to hide the goings-on, and "lookouts" posted outside. Their original recordings were smuggled to the West on cassette tapes label - led with innocuous celebrity names - the Soviet accepted equivalents to our Tom Jones and Harry Belafonte - to fool outgoing customs officials. What was on these tapes, tho poorly recorded by western standards, would provide a glimpse of Russia's premiere Avant/Improv band in its infancy, and parts were released on vinyl by Recommended Records' Points East label, the remainder being provided by subsequent recording sessions. Tho recording conditions improved vastly, they continued to create their own, homemade instrumentation (some referred to as Zgamoniums) with an emphasis on percussive elements, rhythms, strange vocalisings and sounds, whilst incorporating more "normal" instrumentation as well. A perusal of their musical arsenal will show everything including the kitchen sink: toys, shock absorbers, sheet metal, wire brushes, springs, clangy-metallic-thingamajigs, homemade harps etc., all wired up to contact mics and the like, engineered both to defy the listeners' senses and to create their own sonic world.
