Failures is an empowering new musical group from the East Coast. Comprised of four ambitious men, who under the most extreme scrutiny have courageously rendered this super-charged missive of volatile energy. Appearing at a moment in history that can only be best described as a yawning pit of deluded regurgitation, this 14 song attack answers your life’s desperate call for Meaning.

Thank You - Terrible two #2008

Gasatissimi.

The Lewd - Lewd conduct in a public place! (live) #1999

Truth to tell, I wasn't looking forward to reviewing this lp, as my dim recollection of the LEWD was of a rather unextraordinary band. Whether I'm falling victim to the lure of the jasmine-scented past (uh, ahem) or my tastes have gotten broader in my old age (what are the odds of that?). I actually rather enjoyed this live lp (even though it suffers a low guitar volume, as is typical of board tapes). As with a lot of shows of the general era I recollect, the cover songs (in this case, the SONICS' Boss Hoss and SONNY BONO's Bang Bang) tend to stand out as better crafted than the originals and the performance has some loose moments, but it's a worthy (and entertaining) document.

Holy Shit! - Jazz phase (7") #2006

More ugly and gashed up spazzcore from these dairyland miscreations. If this is their jazz phase as the record's title states it's more of a free jazz out-sound squall freekout that maybe not even Miles, Ornette and Sun Ra all hanging out together could've imagined than some Van Morrison record of the 90's, the new Diane Krall or any given Steely Dan record bullshit I get subjected to whenever I decide to check out Jazz night at my hometown brew pub. Slithery dirges erupt in to unhallowed panic attacks. Take something like, oh...let's say THE NEOS and throw it in a bucket of old anti-freeze then twist it and drink what is wrung out (I suggest a kerosene chaser). Disorientation and staggering are to be expected. If conditions persist for more than length of the record, flip it over and play it again.

Like their Detroit brethren the TERRIBLE TWSO these guys write some of the most original and explosive music you can get your ears around today. It's hard, fast, crazed, and careening hardcore punk played at supersonic speed teetering here and there at the brink of total destruction before crashing to a sudden abrupt knee-in-the-bollocks end then the whole process starts again.

Alfred Hitchcock - Music to be murdered by #1958

Obviously, Alfred Hitchcock presents Music to be murdered by wasn't a bad idea - it was a commercial one.
Hitchcock, at least in Music to be murdered by, didn't have to step too far out of his comfort zone to accommodate this project. His characteristic flat, dry, and heavily inflected delivery occupies only the first minute or so of each track, whereas the rest of the time is taken with Jeff Alexander's "spooky" arrangements of familiar tunes with titles related in an ironic way to Hitchcock's murderous narrative - After you've gone and I'll never smile again for example. Hitchcock's monologues are the best thing about the album, and they are quite amusing; Alexander's music is considerably less so. Chances are the Hitchcock enthusiast who obtains this will only want to listen to it once, or perhaps, once a year at Hallowe'en.

The Crimson Curse - Greatest hits #2005

Not too long after the awesome SWING KIDS, who added JOY DIVISION like post punk to the San Diego Hardcore spazz, broke up, the Crimson Curse emerged. They're not totally removed from the Swing Kids sound, but the addition of buzzy synths did mark a new direction. It's not the SCREAMERS or anything, but this one still has a synth punk charm. Dudes later went on to form the LOCUST (ugh) and the ALBUM LEAF (double ugh) and something like 10,000 other bands. But this is the one to hear. I still think this one holds up well, which is a lot considering how much from that time sounds really dated. But his might just be nostalgia talking.

Big Crux - Big crux is a big funk (7") #2011

Hear this: effectively fusing funk and punk rock is an almost alchemical musical feat. Sure, the BIG BOYS and the MINUTEMEN fucking nailed it, but the number of others who got anywhere near close (BEEFEATER, ANGRY RED PLANET, GIANT HAYSTACKS...) without sounding like a beyond-shitty RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS offcut are pretty few and far between. Big Crux can now be added to that scanty list of those who got it right, offering up three big, loose numbers that twang and bounce funkily along whilst somehow managing to not sound like a shedload of shite. The influences are plain as the nose on your face (sound aside they have Tim Kerr artwork, ferfuckssake...) but it's fun, done with heart and just sounds bloody good, the mostly-in-Spanish No stars the pick of the bunch while Big funk and Boys to men round it all off nicely. Way cool, and I can't wait to hear the 12"...

Cale/Conrad/MacLise/Young/Zazeela - Inside the Dream Syndicate-Volume I: Day of Niagara (1965) #2000

In the early '60s, John Cale, Tony Conrad, La Monte Young, Angus MacLise, and Marian Zazeela were all a part of New York's underground music and emergent minimalist scenes. In a variety of formations, usually involving Cale, Conrad, and Young, they played together billed alternately as the THEATER OF ETERNAL MUSIC or as the DREAM SYNDICATE. Together they were articulating what were to become the central tenets of American minimalism. They disbanded around 1965, and since then all involved have staked, depending on the day and weather, various claims to the group's musical and philosophical ideas and - more importantly in this case - unreleased recordings. This album, a remastered copy of a tape from one of the Dream Syndicate's sessions recorded in Young's Church Street apartment, was released without anyone's expressed written consent and occasioned a ten-page statement from Young and his lawyer contesting the label's legal authority to put out this "unauthorized bootleg". The record makes these issues of intellectual property all the more critical, as the few obscure albums from the Dream Syndicate are long out of print and notoriously difficult to find. For anyone who cares about the history of American music, however, the album is an exceptional piece of musical history. All of the early precepts of minimalism are present - incremental variation, drone, sustained pitch - as well as the emphasis on group creation through improvisation. Unfortunately, the mix is not overwhelming in quality, and the effects of the interplay among instruments is lessened. Nonetheless, the album is sonically beatific, formally profound, and an incomparable look inside the Syndicate. Table of the Elements should be praised for letting the chips fall where they may in the interest of a more complete understanding of music history, especially since history is still too near to clearly substantiate anyone's claims.

Sedatives - Sedatives (7") #2008

One more time the Trashcue Team at P.Trash records strikes and provides the small garage-punk world with an already-gone gemstone that was originally released in Canada on the band's own Going Gaga records in an edition of 300 copies that went flying.
These four canadian gentlemen may be held responsibles for having written one of the best songs in ages with Slip away, a STATUES/PEGBOY-like earwig which, just like the other four companions on this record, has a dark and wavy WIPERS-edge and a grinding organ backing the cool and catchy melodies in smashers like Cannot calm down or Dead to the discourse. No mistake about it: this ain't no shitty sounding downer, this is some high-class upper that will make you wiggle and keep you wide awake all night long! You wanna be sedated by the Sedatives! Go grab it now, it's limited to 300 copies on clear vinyl and has a reworked and fancied-up artwork done by Matt at Doublenaut!

Mannequin Men - Fresh rot #2007

Every note on Fresh rot could carry a footnote identifying its source - TELEVISION being a major inspiration. As churning guitars generate jagged melodies, singer Kevin Richard plays the sleazy punk poet, hiding his sensitive side behind a sneering facade. Shameless recycling doesn't keep the Chicago quartet's second album from being great fun, however. Describing the shady practices of bad boys and girls, Private school and Mattress are smart, catchy, albeit tattered, pop tunes. And when Richard chants, We are free, it's easy to share in his wild-eyed euphoria.
